![]() ![]() This was a minor bother for us, but if you don't want to miss a favorite show, select a down time in between your favorite shows to install the device, let the guide get re-built, then create your recording list. Thus, when you hook up the new external hard drive, you will need to wait for the guide to populate (it took ours about 24 hours), then you will need to recreate your list of shows to record. The guide to upcoming shows, plus your list of shows you wish to record, is stored on the specific hard drive to which you are recording. The cable that comes with the external hard drive is only about three feet long, so you may want a longer cable. I purchased the SIIG cable as mentioned in some other reviews, but it wasn't necessary and I am returning it to Amazon. The eSata cable that came with the external hard drive worked fine with our DirecTV HD DVR. Nothing is erased on the DVR hard drive, it just isn't accessible when the external hard drive is connected. If you want to go back to view something stored on your DVR, you will have to reverse the installation procedure, then reinstall it when you want to use the external drive again. The external hard drive acts as an alternative storage place you cannot access the DVR's built-in storage while the external hard drive is hooked up. After about a week's use, it is working great and no complaints. Unplug the power connector to your DVR hook up the eSata cable to both the DVR and the hard drive plug in the hard drive and let it power up then plug in the power cable to the DVR, and you're done. ![]() The DirecTV website has instructions for how to hook up this external hard drive to your DirecTV HD DVR. Wife and I went from 85% full to 1% full (it was keeping her up at night past 80% full). This is a must have for those who record HD regularly. I got mine off Amazon during a super sale for about $95+shipping. Shaw wanted over $200 for the 500gb expander. Know the model of DVR/PVR you have and google it up and read ALOT. I checked out ALOT of online reviews from people just like you and I to see what their experiences were. ![]() I leave the Expander turned on all the time, plugged into the same powerbar as my Motorola DVR. The main point was to make sure you always powered the Expander up first and power it down last in regards to the PVR (if you were going to physically move the units). Instructions with the unit were brief, clear and easy to follow. That being said, I can't recall what the warranty is on this WD Expander, so don't assume it's 5 years too. ![]() You don't offer a 5 year warranty for sub-par equipment or the company will go broke. Western Digital, on their computer hard drives, have been offering a 5 year warranty so I figured the reliability must be there. After a lot of online reading of the model of Motorola PVR that I have from Shaw, I decided on the WD DVR 1TB eSATA expander. ![]()
